Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler!
And those good times were rolling at the Krewe of Barkus & Meoux’s Jazz Brunch yesterday!
As most of you know, I was the 2014 Grand Marshal. The FIRST four-legged Grand Marshal, I might add.
Since then, the incomparable “Brave Heart” stepped up in 2015 and joined the “ranks” of four-legged Grand Marshals. He served admirably I might add, and now, today, we gave paws to honor the 2016 Grand Marshal, FEBE. “FEBE” which stands for Federal Bomb Expert- has served tours of duty overseas. He has also, on 15 different occasions, lent his bomb sniffing expertise to the FBI. On September 11, 2015, FEBE received a medical discharge from the military and retired. At that time, he was adopted by one of his handlers. FEBE suffers from lumbosacral stenosis, in other words- he has a bad back AND is unilaterally deaf. I am humbled to be in his company. He is a true veteran K-9 hero!
Everybody generally gets into Mardi Gras by wearing/decorating with the official Mardi Gras colors…purple, green and gold, but this year, I just couldn’t do it. I mean I come from such a solid military legacy on my human family’s side and with FEBE, as the Grand Marshal, I just felt a military theme was in order. (Actually, I think that my parents ancestors, have fought in every documented war and then some. Humph! And they say bull breeds are fighters. SHEESH!) But I digress. I just wanted to do something special for FEBE.
Naturally, I called in my Design Crew (Mom and Auntie Susan), Implementation Crew (Mom, Auntie Susan and Dad) and Pit Crew (Mom and Dad) and told them that I was going to “ROLL IN HONOR OF FEBE”! As always, they kicked it up a notch and magic started happening. (Mom did mention that a few days notice would trump no notice, but I did not get my scathingly brilliant idea until 36 hours before the party- creative brilliance cannot be rushed- only implementation can be rushed.) Dad bought me a little red wagon and then Mom and Auntie Susan transformed it into a pseudo Willys Jeep. I told them that since I was into rescuing by raising funds for the abused and abandoned, that I wanted my JEEP to be a MASH JEEP (MASH – Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) and that it had to have a big ole RED CROSS on the back! Also, even though FEBE was attached to the Air Force, I decided to “Go Army” to also honor General George S. Patton’s English bull terrier, Willie… possibly one of my ancestors!
So those were the instructions given and voila!…my new pseudo Willys JEEP was sitting in the hall this morning- all packed and loaded. My team even had signs made for the sides. And when I say packed, I mean PACKED! It was complete with an IV bag set up, just incase someone needed fluids. Y’all are aware of dehydration- are you not? One way to get dehydrated is to imbibe in long-term, persistent consumption of excessive amounts of joy juice.
This is Mardi Gras and I’m ready!
Mom and Dad put on their 2015 Duke and Duchess, Krewe of Barkus & Meoux sashes and I wore a hot little Classic Kippers’ camouflage bow tie number, real dog tags Dad had made for me, my Grand Marshal medal and Mom even made me a helmet for those times when I have to go to the front lines. And believe you me, if you’ve ever been hit in the head by flying Mardi Gras beads, then you’ll know that this helmet will come in handy. The whole point is that the beads should be thrown from the float to the parade goers, but in this day and age sometimes the parade goers throw beads back at the people riding on the floats- yes it’s tacky, it’s just plain tacky! Perhaps instead of the beads we should throw copies of Emily Post!
We arrived at The El Dorado casino, where the brunch was being held in one of their ballroom, my pseudo JEEP was unloaded, I hopped in (with a bum boost of course) and we were off!
Enjoy the photos!
That is NOT all……. Parades coming soon!

MY GRAND ENTRANCE
Meeting my K-9 HERO- FEBE!!!!
Old Vietnam warrior meets young Afghanistan warriors.
These handsome brave men were our dinner partners today at the Barkus and Meoux Jazz Brunch. They also presented the Colors. We can’t remember when we’ve had a more delightful afternoon. I did get tickled when one young lion saw Dad’s Purple Heart lapel pin and asked Dad when he was in Vietnam. Dad replied, “2 tours- 1969-1971 before you were born and most likely before your Dad was born.”
He said, ” No, my dad was born in 1964.”
I really DID try NOT to chortle out loud.
My friends, these are the faces of those between us and the enemy and my new friend, 2016 Grand Marshal FEBE, is the face or rather “the nose” between those men and IED bombs. God bless them all!
Waiting for the Colors to be presented with my new friends with and without my helmet.
Just everyone wanted a photo with me. It was special. Even my little buddy, Andrew came by my table!
My Jeep is so fabulous that when my presentation was over I could just lie down, chill out and watch everyone else! Did I mention that Mom brought my special treats, so that anyone who wanted to give me something just had to pull a treat out of the bag and pop it into my mouth?
And as I was leaving, Miss Ginger ran up to give me a goodbye kiss. She’s a real sweetheart and one of my favorite people. Not only because she’s a nice lady, but because she does more for animals than one can imagine.
That is all- for now. Woof, woof aroooooo
